The 2015-2016 vfw Patriot's pen essay contest. Prince of Peace students began entering the VFW Patriot's Pen essay contest in 2009. Since that time, our middle school students have swept the local post awards each of those seven years. We look forward to an eighth sweep this school year. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen essay contest is for students in grades and challenges them to reflect on American history and their own experiences based on a patriotic theme. Patriot’s Pen essay contest is open to students in grades 6 to 8 who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program. The 2015-16 theme, with a Nov. 1 deadline is, “What Freedom Means To Me.” Essays must be no less than 300 words and no greater than 400 words and must be submitted to the Post along with the proper entry form by the deadline.

The completed essay must be in the hands of the VFW Post Patriot’s Pen Chairman by November 1, 2015. Contestants must not identify themselves, their school, city or state in their essays. The official contest entry form is your essay cover sheet. Secure the form with a staple or another fastener to you essay. Contestants can enter only once.
The VFW has an annual nationwide program that provides the opportunity for students in grades 6-8 to compete in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest which begins on the local VFW Post level. Winners are selected from each local Post to participate in a district level competition with the winner advancing to the department or state level. The end result is the state level winners receive a free.
